Dogwood Borer Treatment Is Needed Early Treatment for dogwood borer is needed now. Examine the trunk of the tree for signs of injury by this pest. The borer feeds on the living part of the tree just under the bark, says Extension Entomologist Richard Miller. Feeding causes the bark to crack and separate from the heartwood and the separation usually extends from the base of the tree to the first side branch. Damage is normally found on the Northeast side of the trunk.

The Ohio State University specialist explains that the adult of the borer is a moth and emerges from infested trees the last of May and is most abundant the latter part. of June. Eggs are laid at the base of the trees and on the trunk and larger branches of older trees. Borders can be controlled by spraying with DDT or dieldrin 50 per cent wettable powder at the rate of four tablespoons per gallon of water. Spray the trunk and lower branches until they are thoroughly whitened by the insecticide.
